Long
Range Expansion
RSI prefers the term Long Range Expansion (LRE) over the more typical
term, Long Range Planning. The reason belies our focused effort
on the long term growth of your business.
In contrast
to strategic planning, which primarily involves senior management
and highly selective staff, LRE involves both senior management
and operating personnel. The advantages of a broader involvement
among your entire company include that it creates a wider sense
of ownership, coupled with comprehensiveness. All management personnel
that were involved with the long range planning process will have
an elevated desire to implement the actions and future course corrections
to the LRE plan. Broader involvement generates an endorsement of
change and ensures further success.
At a minimum,
the LRE plan articulates core values and relevant data about the
firm, including its economic environment (past, present, and future)
and its organization for the purpose of attaining specific goals.
It also includes objectives and strategies for addressing future
growth potential in current markets, substitute markets and new
markets. The LRE planning horizon is not a standard fixed period
(for example five years). The planning horizon varies, depending
on your industry’s life cycle.
Every LRE plan
is composed of five planning disciplines:
- Announcing
the Need, Spreading the Word Across the Organization
- Review Historical
and Current State of the Business
a. Include successes and failures
b. Define general economic conditions
- Define Markets
- including a broad business definition
- Ready, Set,
Go! - The LRE plan is written. Now what?
a. Management commits to implementation
b. Change assignments are made at a department level with specific
implementation time frames
- Structured
Review of the LRE plan with Corrective Recommendations –
at least on a quarterly basis
